Welcome to the diary of our loft conversion

We own a 3 bedroom semi-detached house in North-West Sheffield. It's slightly larger than most of the "standard" 3 bedroom semi's locally, meaning that we have 3 double sized bedrooms, and a cellar which covers the entire floor area of the house.

I work from home quite a bit, and my wife's paper crafting hobby takes up a fair bit of storage space.

2 young kids, and all the toys that this leads to means that we're bursting at the seams.

We'd originally planned to look at a conversion in a couple of years, but decided to get an idea of how much it was going to cost earlier this year.
We got a couple of quotes to put 2 further bedrooms and a second family bathroom in the loft space, and realised that we might as well get it done sooner rather than later.

The final design has a new master bedroom, which looks like it'll be getting on for 14 feet square, a second smaller bedroom (which will be used as an office / craft room) and a shared shower room. We considered an en-suite, but given that the house only currently has 1 WC and we were putting a second bathroom on the top floor, an additional family shower room made most sense. We will also gain a large cupboard on the new landing.

The house currently has a hipped style roof. The build will convert this to a gable end, and put a large dormer on the rear. There will be 2 velux windows to the front. The new stairs will start from the first floor landing, and go up above the existing staircase. Our house has the bathroom at the front of the house, and so the door needs to be moved slightly to give enough headroom on the existing staircase. Thankfully, no other changes are required, and so there will be minimal disturbance to the currently tiled walls and suite. The only other real change to the exterior will be the removal of the rear chimney stack.

The rear of the house faces almost due south, and so the rear bedroom and shower room will get sun all day. The front bedroom - the office - will be less well naturally lit.

We just can't wait for it to get started!
